Song

Song is a workshop/participatory vocal performance that explores presence as the root of vocalization. All types of voices are invited, regardless of singing skill, to engage in a music composition that consists of a series of guided exercises and prompts, culminating in a site-specific sonic infiltration.

The idea for this project arrived from a personal need for communal affirmation in the midst of rising universal fascism. Throughout my career, I have consistently valued the importance of holding and sharing space with others, within and transcending musicality. With Song, I pose the following: as we each navigate ways to stay connected to our communities in times of oppression and uncertainty, feelings of discouragement may arise and thus impact the importance of “showing up”. But when we do, how do we each make ourselves known? What can our respective voices do when we are intentional in body and heart? Can a whisper, a sigh or a delicate hum reverberate as a thunderclap? Every presentation of Song is meant to emphasize the vitalness of every participant's focused presence and how each voice contributes to the creation of a uniquely enduring work, reflecting where we are and where we yearn to be.

Song premiered at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in September of 2025.
